What we do

A local charity working for Animals, People and the Environment

The Animal Centre is run by RSPCA Llys Nini Branch, although affiliated to the National RSPCA, it is a separate independent, locally based registered charity. Llys Nini Branch receives no financial help towards the running costs of the centre the National RSPCA. All the running costs are paid by donations, legacies, volunteer fundraising and our 7 charity shops.

Molly after one weekMolly at arrivalLlys Nini Branch rescues and cares for approximately 2,000 animals each year. The Animal Centre has accommodation for 70+ cats, 50+ dogs and various small mammals and birds. It is not a sanctuary but aims to rehome unwanted companion animals (animals that would otherwise probably be abandoned).

It also acts as a "clearing house" for injured wildlife.

Seal

The Centre also houses the RSPCA's only seal unit in Wales. Injured and separated seal pups are brought to the Centre, where they remain until well enough to be transported to the RSPCA Seal facility in Norfolk.

Volunteer

Llys Nini Animal Centre provides volunteering opportunities for the public, as well as students/people on work experience/placements (able bodied and those with special needs), Shaw Trust, New Start, New Deal and Community Service Schemes. It is therefore of significant social and economic importance in the Penllergaer area.

Shaw Trust

DormouseEnvironment WalesLlys Nini Branch owns the 78 acres on which the Animal Centre is situated. The animal accommodation is placed at the centre of this land, so that the animals do not cause a noise nuisance to any of our neighbours.

OtterThe land is partially managed under the Tir Gofal Scheme and through an Environment Wales grant (which funds an Environment Manager) prioritising biodiversity and safe-guarding indigenous wildlife. There is a variety of habitats which are home to otters, brown hare, possibly dormice and many other species.

Educational VisitLlys Nini Animal Centre hosts educational visits from school and community groups. The Volunteer Education Officer also visits schools and other groups to talk about the Centre's work, sustainable pet care and tackling Wales' Litter Problem.

There is a short nature/education trail with disabled access in place. The plan is, using grant aid, to open the grounds for educational visits and public access.

The Centre and grounds are open for visits - details of the nature trail here. People can view the animals for adoption or walk around the grounds and see the wildlife.

Better Woods for WalesWe have just won a Better Woods for Wales Grant to put in 2Km of footpaths, trails etc. This coupled with our new, soon to be opened bird hide will make Llys Nini an attractive place to visit.

Charity ShopThe Animal Centre and Charity Shops act as recycling and reuse points for many items, thus reducing land fill. The Animal Centre reuses textiles and paper for animal bedding etc. once used the textiles from the Animal Centre and that not sold in the 6 Charity Shops are recycled, either being sent to the Third World or sold for industrial rags. In 2008 the charity recycled over 90 tonnes of unwanted textiles, saving a lot of land fill, and obviously sold a lot more for "reuse".

The Big IssueThe shops in Neath Port Talbot support the Big Issue/Council's "Rough Sleeper Initiative" by providing emergency clothes and bedding to homeless people in need. The shops also recycle and encourage reuse of 1000s of kilos of unwanted textiles each year.

Safe Haven Kennel Sponsorship Scheme

Many of our supporters sponsor a kennel or cat pod for £1 per week. They receive a certificate telling them which animal space they are supporting and can even visit the animal that they are helping to rescue. Find out more about Safe Haven here
